Preparing to Run a Marathon

.
If you've ever run a marathon, or even been a spectator, you'll appreciate the motivation and commitment involved. If you're not prepared when it comes to race day you can expect many hours of suffering and struggle!

It doesn't have to be that way, of course, if you put in the required training over several months. This requires commitment and motivation, and a belief that the accumulation of all those training miles will help you to reach your goal-- whether this is time-oriented, or the equally valid desire to get round.

So what is meant exactly by motivation and commitment? Motivation is the desire to achieve something unusual that gives you the incentive to do things that other people are not prepared to do. Not many people are prepared to train week in, week out so that they can stand at the start of a marathon and say to themselves, "yes, I am ready and I couldn't have done anything more."

You can always do something more, but even the elite athletes feel that way. Every athlete has their challenges -- whether it's getting the children ready for school, or an Achilles injury. It's how we overcome these challenges that make us stronger, and mean we can stand on the start line with a quiet confidence.

If you're working full time you might have to get up every day at five a.m. to fit your training in, and this will take commitment, motivation and determination. It won't help if after a few weeks you revert to your former habits, and get up half an hour before you have to leave for work.

Whether it is getting up early, or beginning a fitness program your motivation and commitment needs to last over the long term to have an affect. In training for a marathon it will not help running for ten miles every two weeks, and doing no exercise in between. Your body will have forgotten what it has to do by the time you run again! It is better to run three or more times a week with one longer run on the weekend, and you will be in better shape.

These small, regular runs will add up to success over time, but they are far easier to do when you have a target to aim at. This can be a time you want to run, or the desire to complete the 26 mile race. Either way if you know what you want to achieve you will be more likely to do the things you need to do. Having a target concentrates the mind, and increases your motivation.

Starting a Lifelong Running Program

.
I don't think you'll find too many fitness experts who don't feel running is one of the best exercises you can do to keep in shape.

The criticism is the stress on the body. The knees and leg muscles do take a beating. But . . . there are plenty of runners in their 60's and 70's who have been running for years and continue to do so.

Running is simply too great of an exercise to dismiss. Here's a way to make running a lifelong exercise with minimal injuries.

First, warm up is very important. Ideally you should walk at a brisk pace for 5 minutes of more. After the body starts to get warmed up, some stretching exercises will help loosen the muscles and prepare them for the workout to come.

A continuous steady stretch should be used. Do not bounce!!

Forget distance - think time. We want to work up to a nice 30 minute workout.

Before you try to progress, the first goal will be walking at a brisk pace comfortably for 30 minutes. If you can do this now, you can move to the next step. If not, work towards that goal.

Once you reach the 30 minutes of brisk walking, you can move to the next step. Warm up as stated for no less than 5 minutes. Now you're going to begin to walk briskly and then run at a slow pace until you become winded. Then walk briskly until you recover. Begin running again.

If it's 15 seconds, fine. 30 seconds - go for it. The idea is to gradually build up your running time.

Start out doing this 3 - 5 times during your exercise. You can do more if you have been exercising regularly.

Here's the good news. Just doing that will be a good exercise routine. Even walking for 30 minutes but getting to the point where you throw in 5 - 1 minute runs is great! You get your heart beat to climb and when you drop back to walking, the rate stays elevated for awhile.

Now, if you're up to it and are so inclined, start increasing the running. Again, a little at a time. If you injure yourself, not only do you have to stop the exercise for a time, but you also might be less likely to pick it up again.

So walk and then begin running for a couple minutes at a time. Or jog at a slow pace for as long as you feel comfortable.

Here's another tip to remember if your routine works up to running the entire time. If you run at a steady pace, then throw in faster runs of 30 seconds or more, and return to running at a steady pace to recover, you will actually get more benefit in your running routine.

The sprints (not all out but we'll call them sprints to make it easy) will force your body out of it's comfort zone. You will become much fitter than you would by running at a slow and steady pace for your entire routine.

Now, if you want to break the boredom, run some hills. You'll feel it in your shins and the front of your thighs as you run up the hill but, and this is good news, it's actually less strain on your knees.

However, be careful and slow it down while running down the hill. Here's where your knees can really take a beating. There's a tendency to pick it up while running downhill as you have great momentum.

Ignore that tendency.

Obviously if you are training for a racing event or such, this type of routine will not apply to you; unless you are just starting to run. But this running routine is something you can do to keep yourself fit while minimizing the risk of injury.

The Puzzle Of Sudoku Puzzles

.
Sudoku Puzzles are, in simple terms, number games. In the United States, Sudoku Puzzles are also referred as Number Place, but the term sudoku is of Japanese origin. It basically means multiple isolations, but the term is actually the Japanese abbreviation of a longer phrase, Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru, which, when translated, would mean "the digits must remain single".

These puzzles were first published in the United States in 1979 by Dell magazine which gave the numbers game the name Numbers Place. Sudoku Puzzles were eventually noticed and brought to Japan by Nikoli Company Limited, a puzzle publishing firm, which gave the game its trademark name Sudoku.

Sudoku then went full circle when US-based Kappa reprinted Nikoli's Sudoku in the magazine GAMES under the name Squared Away. Subsequently, Sudoku Puzzles gained popularity in other countries, particularly in the United Kingdom, where it was published in the London-based newspaper The Times. Additionally, the game was also included in a number of puzzle anthologies, like The Giant 1001 Puzzle Book, under the heading Nine Numbers.

Sudoku puzzles are played on a grid measuring 9 x 9. This grid is often made up of 3 x 3 subgrids, regions, or cells. It starts with various numbers starting from 1 through 9. Some cells of the grid already contain numbers, which are referred as givens. The object of the game is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that every column, row, and region each contain the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Therefore, each number in the overall grid is unique, or isolated, in each of the three patterns, hence, the term multiple isolations.

The main attraction of Sudoku puzzles is that its rules are simple and easy to follow, yet, being able to play the game successfully is quite difficult. This is why many teachers recommend the puzzle to their students in order to hone their skills in logical reasoning.

Sudoku Puzzles are usually ranked in terms of their difficulty, which mainly depends on how many numbers are given and how easy it is to logically determine subsequent numbers once a player starts completing the puzzle.

The term number place to describe Sudoku Puzzles is a bit misleading since the choice of numbers as an instrument to play the game is not entirely unique. Most likely, they were chosen more for convenience. In reality, any set of distinct symbols may actually be employed to play Sudoku, without necessarily altering the rules. This can include letters, shapes, colors, etc.

Sudoku puzzles are usually available free in many publications. However, a number of these publications have made slight variations in their respective versions of the game. Penny Press and Knight Features Syndicate, for instance, both use letters instead of numbers when preparing the very entertaining and stimulating puzzle. ESPN also made use of Sudoku Puzzles when it published the puzzle game where it substituted the positions on a baseball field for the numbers 1-9.

How To Make A Jogger Smile

.
Have you ever wondered why joggers, as they plod forth in grim determination, never smile? It’s something that mystified me occasionally, as I enjoy my walk along a country path with my dog. And then I finally figured it out. Well, at least I think I did.

Not far from where I live, there is a disused old railway line. It’s an overgrown lane now and a rather pretty place to walk – far from traffic noise, with hedges and shrubs on either side, bursting with birdsong and the innocent beauty of country life. Admittedly, at times it’s a bit of a dog walkers’ highway and then there are the joggers racing along.

I’m aware that not everyone is keen on an overfriendly four legged fur ball bounding toward them, so when dog free people cross our path, I call Cookie and keep her at heal until they have passed, normally with a friendly hello and thanks. Not so with most runners.

Whereas other walkers smile, exchange a greeting and maybe even a few words, those people who run tend to hold their heads straight and their lips too. Rarely a word or even a nod, to loosen the concentrated gaze toward an invisible, maybe unattainable goal.

For a while I thought that maybe they’re so far up on their jogger’s high, that they don’t see us down below. But that wouldn’t make sense. would it? If you’re somewhere close to bliss, then surely you would exude that from every part of your being. It would be joy and joy is contagious, it’s fun and brings a smile and a bounce.

So, why do joggers never smile? And what’s the secret of those who do? My theory is that the reason many people run isn’t one that really motivates, inspires and energises them. They aren’t running ‘in the moment’, but hastening toward more fitness, less weight and social acceptance as a trend follower. They are literally chasing after an external goal that is frustratingly far away in the future. But then, occasionally, there is a very different kind of runner.

The person who may be just as pooped, but has a glow on their face that’s not just sweat. They are the ones who are moving with their body, mind and soul right here in the present moment. Feeling the movement with each step they take, breathing in fresh, crisp air and experiencing pure delight at being able to do so. These are the runners who seem to glide past elegantly, leaving you feeling just that little bit better about your day as they send a little smile and a nod your way.

I’m certain that these are also the joggers who run for the mere sake of being alive, of enjoying their body and being in nature. There's a spiritual side to their running - a kind of moving meditation. The fact that they will become healthier and fitter as a result is a welcome side effect and their joy is in the present moment.

And maybe, watching the grim and the happy runners and figuring out what made the difference was partly responsible for the development of BodyBliss™. BodyBliss is an holistic training system we offer to create health, wellbeing and balance between body, mind and spirit – in a word, bliss. That’s my contribution to enjoying exercise with an inner smile.

The Puzzling World Of Sudoku Puzzles

.
Sudoku puzzles are the newest puzzle craze currently sweeping across many parts of the United States. The game has only one basic rule, that is, every row and every column on a 3 by 3 box of Sudoku puzzles has to contain the numbers 1 through 9, but only once with no one digit repeating itself.

Sudoku puzzles, also referred to as Number Place in the United States, are said to be deceptively simple, since a player can start the game quite easily only to find himself later on getting stuck in the middle of the game with no clear puzzle solution in sight.

Good Sudoku puzzles ideally should ultimately have only one solution, using only one's logic skills, meaning guesswork is not an effective method in solving the puzzle.

However, solving Sudoku puzzles on pure logic alone can prove to be a difficult task. For logic to be effective, a puzzle should be able to move progressively. This simply means that at every stage in the solution of the puzzle, there must be at least one square or block whose value can be determined easily. Determining that one value should then uncover at least one other fully determined value, and so on and so forth. Yet, this process can best be achieved by applying guesswork. By making a speculative or guessed entry in one block, a player can eventually determine if the other block has a logical entry or maybe none at all. This can be quite confusing, but the implication here is that while Sudoku claims that it can be solved by logic alone, it is not a good starting option. A player has to first make a guess or even guesses on his or her initial entry.

While Sudoku puzzles appear to continue boggling the minds of many puzzle addicts, it is interesting to note how the puzzle can be solved with relative ease by many computer
programs. The question of logic and guesswork again comes into play in this particular aspect because most computer softwares
are often programmed to make use of the trial-and-error concept, making quick corrections when an errant entry is made in a particular square or block.

Playing against a computer in a game involving Sudoku puzzles thus tends to be a futile endeavor. Your opponent can easily make the necessary corrections, using purely trial-and-error, and ultimately finding the right solution. You, on the other hand, are stuck in logical thinking, trying to justify the entry of a particular digit in a particular square or block.

Nevertheless, the beauty of Sudoku puzzles is that while the rules involved are quite simple, they do not necessarily solve the puzzle by themselves alone. The game also requires the application of a certain degree of analytical method that is not entirely written in black and white, but often can be discovered only by mere guesswork. A few of these in fact have been given interesting names such as "swordfish" and "x-wing". In this regard, it is no great wonder that Sudoku puzzles have become a popular pastime in many parts of the world.

A Sudoku A Day Exercises The Brain

.
Negative issues are usually associated with addiction. Drug abuse, excessive drinking, and even too much gambling are all negative activities that are highly addictive. But if there is one kind of addiction that is actually beneficial for adults and kids alike, it would be an addiction to sudoku puzzles. Researchers rank solving sudoku puzzles daily among the top ten non-traditional and alternative ways to boosts brain power. Other brain boosting moves include high-protein diets, listening to classical music, and lots of rest. These are simple but are rather difficult to follow because of budget limitations, personal preferences, and lifestyle. This is the advantage sudoku games holds over other brain boosters. They are accessible from newspapers, books, and even the Internet. They are also workable between breaks or at any spare time. So every time someone chastises you for doing sudoku again, kindly explain and hope that they pick up the habit too.

Though sudoku puzzles are not mathematical problems, solving the puzzles requires the most basic tool of mathematics and science: logic. Since the puzzles entail the use of logic, common sense, and concentration, the brain is put out of the stupor of doing routine, mundane tasks. In other words, your brain actually gets a break and a good work-out. Studies reveal that the more the brain uses its skills, the better it works. Brains that get more exercise are determined to be more active, and its cells are healthier. Researchers even associate sudoku brain exercises to physical exercise. They stress that just as physical exercise keeps muscle loss at bay, sudoku exercise keeps brain cells from dying and also encourages better brain function. Education is important, but studies actually show that students who do mental workouts like sudoku have higher IQs than students who do not. This only shows that doses of sudoku are more than just ways to pass time. They actually help in improving your ability to comprehend more complex ideas.

Ian Robertson, a neuroscientist, facilitated a research among the elderly with the premise that decreased mental ability is not inevitable with the right stimulation. The research included two groups of elderly people: the first group solved sudoku puzzles as part of their routine, while the second did not. After some time, their IQ levels were tested and compared to their test results before the experiment. The sudoku-solving group was found to have increased their mental abilities by a significant percentage while the other group showed no change. Dr. Robertson cited a similar research wherein 3,000 people, aged 65-94, were found to have increased their mental capabilities and age by as much as 14 years, just by ten sessions of brain boosting exercise like sudoku.

Other experts agree with these findings, saying that solving challenging mind games like sudoku puzzles inhibit or prevent the development of Alzheimer's disease and memory loss. Health trends also show that adults with demanding, and intellectually challenging jobs benefit from better mental function when they age. Sudoku functions just like these jobs because it requires brain exertions.

As it is, experts advise adults to encourage children to solve puzzles like sudoku to start mental improvement earlier in life. Sudoku exercises are actually adopted by some schools to stimulate thinking and foster better academic performance of their students. So instead of letting kids watch TV, or read comics, hand them sudoku puzzles. Then, both you and your kids can defend your love of sudoku to those poor souls who do not understand the beauty, joy, and benefits of solving it.

Horse Racing Betting, a Beginners Guide

.
So you want to bet on the horses but you haven’t got a clue where to start. You look at the form but at this stage the numbers don’t mean a thing. Well listen up as what I’m about to tell could result in a few winners today.

First things first, ignore the jockeys silk (There nice colours, So What!) and don’t try and pick a cool sounding name.

Right now I’ve got that off my chest let me tell you a few things you need to take into account;

Look at the jockey who is riding the horse and look at the trainer of the horse. There will also be a section that say’s ‘top jockeys’ and ‘top trainers’. Make sure you pick a good trainer and then second to that a good jockey.

The next factor to take into consideration is those little form numbers at the side of the horses name, what your looking for are 1,2 and 3’s these mean first, second and third in a race and if it has a few on these it’s last five races it’s in form and should stand a good chance to run well.

So now we should have a horse with a good trainer and a decent jockey that is showing some past form. The selection should have a good run and hopefully with a bit of look it will finish well.

There is plenty more factors to take into account when selecting winning horses and you can use horse racing systems to help you select winners. In part two I’m going to show you a few little letters you should look out for when selecting for horses

Sudoku – Mind Games At Their Best?

.
Sudoku is a logic based puzzle, somewhat similar to a crossword puzzle, except it uses digits instead of words. The name Sudoku is an abbreviation of a Japanese phrase which means “the digits must remain single”. It is also sometimes called Number Place or Nampure.

The history of Sudoku

You can find predecessors of Sudoku as early as 1895, when an early version or variant of Sudoku appeared in a French newspaper.

The game now known as Sudoku was not invented until 1979, however, and was actually invented in Indianapolis, not Japan. Sudoku became widely popular in 1986, when the Japanese puzzle publisher Nikoli found and published the puzzle.

The game of Sudoku

Sudoku is based on a graph of squares, nine squares by nine squares. This graph is sub-divided into 9 3x3 squares or regions. The board looks much like 9 tic tac toe games all together.

The game is played by placing digits (1-9) in the squares on the game. Easy enough. The tough part is that each region (3x3 square, each diagonal row, each horizontal row, and each vertical row of squares must contain one of each of the nine digits, but may not have duplicates.

Each Sudoku game has some of the fields pre populated with numerals, called givens or clues. The difficulty is not necessarily related to how many fields are populated, though.

Difficulty

Sudoku is a very simple game in it's construction, but it can require some serious brain effort and skill to solve. Publishers often rank games according to difficulty, using 4-5 levels to organize games by their difficulty.

Accessibility

Sudoku puzzles are published in many newspapers and magazines around the world. They are also available in print form, and as computer games. Probably the easiest way to get them, though, is from a website that features free Sudoku puzzles. Many websites can also generate custom puzzles for free.

How To Properly Begin A Jogging Routine

.
Jogging is not only one of the best ways to burn fat and lose weight; it also makes your heart and lungs stronger. You can jog almost anywhere and just about any time you want, making it very convenient to do. This is why there are so many people who do it.

The trouble that most people have in the beginning is not knowing how to get started properly and they usually end up doing it wrong. This has prompted scores of people to quit doing it before it has had enough time to do them any good.

Let's take a look at some things that may make it a little easier to get started on a jogging routine without running yourself into the ground.

The first and probably the most common mistake people make when starting a jogging routine is that they start out too fast. They go out and pace themselves much to fast and end up huffing and puffing out of breath after 5 or 10 minutes. This is an instant recipe for failure and many people quit within a few days.

Some people who are a little more resilient may keep going for a while thinking that if they just stay with it long enough, it will start to get easier. Usually what happens is it gets harder because even though they might be getting in better condition, they continue to push harder along the way so it seems that there is no progress.

When you are about to set out on a jogging routine, the best thing you can do is buy a heart rate monitor before you ever jog your first step. With one of these, you can set up a pace that is comfortable for you and you can keep within that level throughout your jog. This means that you will not have to "guess" about the pace and you will not have to feel like your lungs are on fire when you are finished.

The key here is to always jog between 50% and 70% of your maximal heart rate. This is easy to do with a heart rate monitor because you can keep a close check on your heart rate as you go. You can speed your pace up if it goes a little low, and slow down if it goes a little high. You can even slow to a walking pace if your heart rate goes too high, and resume a jogging pace once it goes below 50%.

The way for you to know where your heart rate should be to be between 50% and 70% is by using this formula:

Subtract your age from 220. This will be your maximal heart rate. Now, simply multiply this by .50 and .70 and that will give you your targeted heart zone. Below is an example of this formula.

Say you are age 40

220 minus 40 equals 180

180 times .50 equals 90

180 times .70 equals 126

By looking at this example, you can see that if you are 40 years old, you would keep your heart rate between 90 and 126 while doing your jog.

The fact is, you do not need to go fast to get benefits from jogging, it is how long you are moving that counts. It is more beneficial to cover a mile in say, 15 minutes than to cover it in 7 minutes and then be exhausted.

If you stay within the limits of your heart rate capabilities, you will begin to add more time and miles to your jog as you go and jogging will become something you look forward to instead of something you dread doing.

Kakuro Puzzles By Mastersoft

.
Can't get enough of Japanese puzzles? Well, seems like Mastersoft is hooked, too. Only months after the release of Mastersoft Sudoku, Mastersoft releases the new Mastersoft Kakuro. The object of the game is still the same as with the traditional kakuro puzzles, only this time, players solve the puzzles on a cooler interface. Mastersoft designed the game for Microsoft-equipped mobile phones such as the Windows Mobile and Pocket PC. A desktop version of the interactive kakuro puzzles are also released. This is quite a bonus for kakuro fans who own the mobile versions; they simply have to select the "Upgrade" option and download the program on their desktop.

Mastersoft Kakuro offers six levels. Each level features kakuro puzzles from "simple" to "master". The simple puzzles are, obviously, the easiest to do and complete. They usually come in smaller boxes. Master-level puzzles are very difficult which take hours to finish. But Mastersoft provides some neat features and options which make solving the mind-boggling puzzles a wee bit easier and fun. A warning, though: if you think that sudoku is addictive, well, Mastersoft Kakuro is more addicting. This is a game that not only fills up your free time, but eats your time as well, if you don't take care.

The design and features of Mastersoft Kakuro echoes that of Mastersoft Sudoku. However, these features are improved and enhanced to help players tread the more difficult way of being a kakuro master. The game provides an unlimited number of kakuro puzzles. The appearance of the playing area or grid looks much like a traditional kakuro puzzle. A crossword-like box with white and dark spaces with some numbers on it greets players at the start. To remind everyone, the object of the game is to fill out the boxes with the numbers one to nine to get the number or numbers on the dark boxes as sums. The numbers on the upper right of the boxes correspond to the row, while the numbers on the bottom left refer to the column. The challenge is to position the numbers in the proper boxes without repeating a number within a solution. Like with the traditional puzzles, this interactive version preserves the need for cognitive skills and mathematical ability.

Features of the game include a timing system which you can customize. You can hide the timer if you get easily distracted by time. If the game skin bothers you, it is perfectly changeable with several other available skins installed with the game. The sound option is also open for modifications to suit your preferences. Though keeping score is not a feature of traditional kakuro puzzles, this Mastersoft version carries one. Scores are based on how fast you solve the puzzles and the number of mistakes you incurred. If you get panicky with your low score, you can opt to hide it.

To give your game more personality or to reflect your personal style in your kakuro puzzles, the game includes the option of color-coding your answers. Multiple possible answers can be written in a single box with the Tap n Hold One Click Candidates option. Players can use their mouse to select their answers from the number box, or to key in their answers from their keyboards. With helpful tools such as these, advancing and being a Kakuro Master is not an impossibility. However, after completing the required number of puzzles for a certain level, players advance to more difficult puzzles. But there is no need to fret; the tools also get more advance to adapt to the difficulty of the game. Pop-up matrices show you possible answers. At the same time, clicking on the "Hint" button shows you the wrong answers and the possible replacements. There is also a bookmarking option which allows you to mark certain answers that you doubt. No wonder Mastersoft Kakuro is considered as the most advanced and powerful kakuro puzzle game for Windows Mobile and Pocket PCs.

Despite its high-tech appeal, Mastersoft Kakuro is based on the designs of a hundred kakuro puzzles enthusiasts. The makers reviewed the game's prototype and Mastersoft modified the game based on their suggestions. For on-the-go kakuro puzzles, Mastersoft Kakuro is your best bet.

Injury Free Runners Choose The Right Kind Of Running Shoe

.
Many people start personal running programs with all the right intentions, and plenty of motivation, only to slack off or quit after a few weeks. In many of these cases foot, ankle or knee soreness is the culprit.

Running on hard surfaces like paved roads and sidewalks can cause injury. If you live in a major metropolitan area there may not be much you can do about that. Running on uneven surfaces is also often the cause of discomfort or injury. The kinetic energy of your foot striking the ground while running is about five times your body weight. For a 200 pound man that means that each foot absorbs about 1,000 ft/pounds of energy each time it strikes the ground. It is no wonder running can create discomfort or injury.

You may only have a limited choice deciding where to run, but you have many choices deciding which pair of running shoes to put on your feet. It does make a big difference. The fundamental principle of selecting the proper running shoe is that the shoe should fit your foot, not the other way around. Running shoes do not have a break-in period. Running shoes will not stretch or contort their shape to fit your fit. Your running shoes fit the first time you put them on or never.

Your mission is to find a shoe that conforms as closely as possible to the shape of your foot. How do you determine the shape of your foot, and why is that important?

Shoe manufacturers are aware that, anatomically, feet usually fall into one of three categories. Some people have "floppy" feet that are very loose-jointed. Because feet like this are too mobile, they give and roll to the inside when they hit the ground. Floppy feet leave a flat foot impression on wet sand. Improperly fitted running shoes tend to cause uneven wear on both the inside and outside of the shoe. The heels will tend to wear unevenly on the inside.

Common injuries for floppy feet from improperly fitted running shoes are knee pain, arch pain, and heel pain. Floppy feet need motion control running shoes.

At the other extreme are people with "rigid" feet. These feet are very tight-jointed and do not yield enough upon impact. Rigid feet leave only the toes, balls of the feet, and heel impression in wet sand. Another name is high arch feet. Improperly fitted running shoes for rigid feet tend to wear unevenly on the outside of the shoe. Heels wear excessively on the outside edge.

Common rigid foot running injuries are stress fractures, shin splints, and ankle sprains. To help avoid these impact related injuries, these people need impact control running shoes.

Finally, the third type, or normal foot, falls somewhere between mobile and rigid. This type of foot can use any running shoe that is stable and properly cushioned.

If you want to prevent injury and stay with your running program you need either motion control running shoes, impact control running shoes, or properly fitted cushioned running shoes. The major shoe manufacturers are way ahead of you and already have the running shoe that is engineered for your particular foot shape. The ball socket, which is the widest part of the shoe, is the most important fitting area.

Here are few tips on fitting the proper running shoes. Your foot size changes regularly and what fit comfortably a few years ago may not be right today. You want 3/8 to ½ inch of room from the end of your longest toe to the front of the shoe. The shoe will not stretch to fit. Measure your feet at the end of the day. They may be ½ size larger than when you got up.

Picking The Right Running Shoe

.
There is no doubt about it, with the amazing variety and the availability of current running shoes at the moment choosing the right running shoe (and if you don't know what you doing) can be a daunting task.

If all you are wishing to do is buy something trendy and that looks good then the problem isn't so great. However if you need the correct pair of shoes for serious sport then you have to view the whole process differently.

If you are buying shoes for serious purposes then there are certain basic criteria with which it will help if you knew about.

Firstly you have to understand that if you are road running then depending on how your foot strikes the ground this affects your susceptibility to injury. This also determines the shoe type that you should choose. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all. All sorts of different shoes are designed for specific foot strikes.

Having established therefeor that your foot strike is a central part of the right technique and to match it is essential that you get the right shoe. How do you match your foot strike to the right shoe?

Another important aspect of running shoes is understanding exactly what is shoe cushioning.

Lastly you have to decide do you need a performance shoe, racing shoes or a trail shoe and how you correctly match your body frame size in relation to shoe selection.

It's a bit more complicated than just getting big shoes for big feet.

Choosing properly running shoe shoes as they say, starts with a discussion of how your feet move when they are in contact with the ground or what is called the foot strike.

If you choose shoes that encourage your feet to maintain a neutral position from impact through to push off you are likely to increase the risk of running related injuries. It makes sense really to try and allow some sort of footwear that is going to hopefully mimic the natural movement offyour feet in relation to the ground.

Conversely if you happen to have shoes that allow your feet to roll excessively inwardly or outwardly then you are likely to increase the likelihood of injury. This last point is essential in fact it is very easy to keep shoes for longer than you actually should do, because you are fond of them. This is not meant in the sense of falling in love with them for the fact that shoes are old and comfortable and on the surface feel good.

If the side supports of the shoe are too loose and the heel too worn then the end product is that your foot is going to move within the shoe and you are going to injure yourself sooner rather than later.

As has been mentioned before, the goal and the target when you're choosing the correct running shoe for you is to find the right shoe that encourages your feet to maintain a neutral position throughout the entire cycle from touchdown to push off.

Types Of Best Rated Running Shoes

Make Sure Your Running Shoes Fit

.
This is the most important step in finding the right shoe. A running shoe that fits will be snug but not tight. Buying running shoes that are too small is a common problem. Your running shoes may need to be a half to a full size larger than your street shoes.

To check for adequate room at the top by pressing your thumb into the shoe just above your longest toe. The edge of your thumb should fit between the end of your toe and the top pf the shoe. Your heel should fit snugly into the rear of the shoe and should not slide up and down as you walk or run. Take the shoes for a test run. Most specialty runnng stores allow-even encourage-you to run down the street or around the block so that you can feel the shoes in action.

If you have flat feet and overpronate, you need a shoe that will prevent your foot from rolling in too far, that is, a motion-control shoes have a straight shape that gives maximum support to your foot. Also look for a firm rather than a soft midsole, a dual-density midsole with the denser material along the inner edge of the shoe to prevent excessive pronation, and a firm heel counter to minimize rear-foot motion.

If you have high-arched feet and supinate, your feet do not absorb shock very well, so you need a cushioned shoe. Also, you want a shoe that allows your feet to roll inward, since this helps absorb shock. "Cushioned shoes tend to be less supportive and work with foot rather than try to control it," says Dan Norton, a shoe designer who has worked at several of the major running-shoe companies. You want a shoe with a soft, cushioned midsole and a curved or semicurved shape that permits foot motion as you run.

Your foot type and degree of pronation determine the characteristics that you will need in a running shoe. You can see the shape most clearly by looking at the bottom of the shoe. In general, running shoes come in three shapes-straight, semicurved, and curved-which correspond to the three types of footprints revealed by the wet test. Most experts believe that overpronators should wear a shoe with a straight shape, supinators should wear a shoe with a curved shape, and normal pronators should wear a shoe with a semicurved shape. There are a few other characteristics to consider.

Spend the money to get more durable, more features and good quality running shoes. A good pair of running shoes should last for 400 to 500 miles and is the only critical purchase you have to make. As running shoes have gotten more complicated, so has the terminology used to describe them. The part of the shoe that wraps around and over the top of the foot. It's most of what you see when you look at a running shoe.

Introduction to Sudoku

.
Have you ever played with a Rubik's Cube? You may have mastered the Rubik's cube and are looking for a greater challenge. Try the puzzle game called Sudoku. Sudoku is a number placement puzzle that requires logic skills and patience. It is a fantastic puzzle game that can be found in newspapers, books, and at even here at this website.

How do you play Sudoku?

The Sudoku puzzle consists of a series of grids. The grids include one large 9 x 9 grid that houses, nine 3 x 3 smaller grids. The purpose of the game is to place a number from 1-9 in each of the grid cells. You don't have to worry about finding the sum of the numbers of the rows, columns, like in Magic Squares.

No addition is involved; however there are three conditions that rely on each other and must be followed. Each number 1-9 can appear only once in each column, once in each row, and once in each small 3 x 3 grid. Mathematically, Sudoku puzzles are a derivation of Latin Squares.

The famous mathematician Leonard Euler created Latin Squares. They are a prevalent part of discrete math. Basically, a Latin Square consists of an n x n table filled with numbers, letters, or symbols. Each symbol can only appear exactly once in each row and exactly once in each column. Sudoku puzzles take the Latin Square one step further with the 3 x 3 smaller grid constraints. The fact that you have to make sure that each small 3 x 3 grid contains each number 1-9 only once significantly increases the complexity of the puzzle.

Sudoku puzzles come in varying levels of difficulty. The amount of numbers given initially in the 9 x 9 matrix varies. One would think that the more numbers you are given initially, the easier the puzzle would be to solve. This is not always the case because the "placement" of the numbers has a profound effect on the complexity of the puzzle.

Where did Sudoku puzzles originate?

Sudoku is the Japanese word for "placement puzzle". Sudoku swept Japan in the mid-1980's. Before that, however, a puzzle constructor in the United States named Howard Garnes created the first puzzle of this type in 1979. It was called "Number Place" instead of Sudoku. It was published in the Dell Magazine Math Puzzles and Logic Problems.

How do you solve a Sudoku puzzle?

Good question! The key is to have patience and use your logic skills. Don't just use a trial and error method. Many players construct their own puzzle solving techniques and methods, which they share in Sudoku player online forums.

You can start anywhere in the puzzle, but as a beginner start by focusing on the top three smaller 3 x 3 grids. Look at the initial numbers and start with the number "1". Check to see if a "1" appears in the other two smaller 3 x 3 grids. Then find cells in these smaller grids where you can possibly place a "1" while still adhering to the rules. You will also need to take into consideration 3 x 3 grids that are attached to the given grid. It is like dancing on eggshells, but the key is to look for patterns. Logically, you need to prove why a number should go in a certain cell.

Sudoku is a clever puzzle game that will sometimes make you feel like you are going around in circles. However, practicing on different puzzles will help you to understand certain techniques that work and those that lead you to a dead end. The beauty of the game is that there are a great number of Sudoku puzzles to solve. Time yourself. Many puzzle solvers can finish a puzzle in 10 to 30 minutes. Get out your stopwatch and see how fast you can solve a Sudoku puzzle.

A Brain Teaser Called Sudoku Puzzles

.
Sudoku Puzzles are brain teasers that have also been called wordless crossword puzzles. Sudoku Puzzles are often solved through lateral thinking and have been making a large impact all across the world.

Also known as Number Place, Sudoku puzzles are actually logic-based placement puzzles. The object of the game is to enter a numerical digit from 1 through 9 in each cell that is found on a 9 x 9 grid which is sundivided into 3 x 3 subgrids or regions. Several digits are often given in some cells. These are referred as givens. Ideally, at the end of the game, every row, column, and region must contain only one instance of each numeral from 1 through 9. Patience and logic are two qualities needed in order to complete the game.

Number puzzles very much similar to the Sudoku Puzzles have already been in existence and have found publication in many newspapers for over a century now. For instance, Le Siecle, a daily newspaper based in France, featured, as early as 1892, a 9x9 grid with 3x3 sub-squares, but used only double-digit numbers instead of the current 1-9. Another French newspaper, La France, created a puzzle in 1895 that utilized the numbers 1-9 but had no 3x3 sub-squares, but the solution does carry 1-9 in each of the 3 x 3 areas where the sub-squares would be. These puzzles were regular features in several other newspapers, including L'Echo de Paris for about a decade, but it unfortunately disappeared with the advent of the first world war.

Howard Garns, a 74-year-old retired architect and freelance puzzle constructor, was considered the designer of the modern Sudoku Puzzles. His design was first published in 1979 in New York by Dell, through its magazine Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games under the heading Number Place. Garns' creation was most likely inspired by the Latin square invention of Leonhard Euler, with a few modifications, basically, with the addition of a regional restriction and the presentation of the game as a puzzle, providing a partially-complete grid and requiring the solver to fill in the empty cells.

Sudoku Puzzles were then taken to Japan by the puzzle publishing company Nikoli. It introduced the game in its paper Monthly Nikoli sometime in April 1984. Nikoli president Maki Kaji gave it the name Sudoku, a name that the company holds trademark rights over; other Japanese publications which featured the puzzle have to settle for alternative names.

In 1989, Sudoku Puzzles entered the video games arena when it was published as DigitHunt on the Commodore 64. It was introduced by Loadstar/Softdisk Publishing. Since then, other computerized versions of the Sudoku Puzzles have been developed. For instance, Yoshimitsu Kanai made several computerized puzzle generator of the game under the name Single Number for the Apple Macintosh in 1995 both in English and in Japanese language; for the Palm (PDA) in 1996; and for Mac OS X in 2005.

Suduko has Captured the Minds of Millions!

.
Suduko first appeared as a game in the 18th century. It took almost 200 years before it made it into the media.

In 1979 the first Suduko puzzle was published in an American puzzle magazine called Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games where it was called “Number Place”

Then it disappeared back into obscurity in the West, occasionally appearing in puzzle magazines. In 1984 the Monthly Nikolist paper in Japan published the same kind of puzzle under the name Suduko. Other magazines picked up on this puzzle fad, but due to copyright reasons couldn’t call it Suduko.

It was in 1989 Suduko made its first migration to computers. DigitHunt was published on the Commodore 64, bringing Suduko to a whole new audience. In 1995 it appeared on the Apple Macintosh, and then in 1996 on the Palm PDA.

In 1997 Wayne Gould, a retired judge from Hong Kong saw a partly completed puzzle in a Japanese bookshop. He spent the next six year producing a computer program to quickly produce these puzzles.

Wayne knew that the British loved crosswords and puzzles, so he contacted The Times newspaper in London. As he imaged, they leapt upon the idea and on 12th November 2004 published it under the name of Su Doku. Every issue of The Times since this date has contained a Su Doku puzzle.

Su Doku immediately grabbed the attention of the public, and just three days later The Daily Mail published the puzzle, but called it “Codenumber”. On January 19th 2005 The Daily Telegraph published its Sudoku puzzle, which was quickly picked up by other newspapers.

On May 20th 2005, Sudoku made an intercontinental leap and appeared in The Daily Telegraph of Sydney. This massive surge of interest has resulted in Sudoko being called “The fastest growing puzzle in the world”.

Despite being the first publishers of Su Doku, The Times were caught napping my the Daily Telegraph. Whereas The Times hid the puzzle in the middle of the paper, The Telegraph splashed Sudoko over the front page, realising that it was increasing sales. They took advantage of their market lead and published the first Sudoku book before the other papers realised just how popular Sudoku was.

By mid 2005, every paper in Britain contained a Sudoku puzzle and there was no escaping. Even small local papers were getting in on the popularity of the puzzle. The newspapers began to compete with each other, with both The Times and Daily Mail both claiming to be the first to feature this puzzle.

2005 was really the year that Sudoku captured the imagination of the British people. The newspapers published more and more Sudoku puzzles, even Teletext got in on the act. And then finally in July 2005, the satellite channel Sky One hosted the world’s first live TV Sudoku show.

It was during the promotion of this show that Sky One built a 275 foot (84m) square puzzle on a hillside near Chipping Sodbury near Bristol, England. It was next to the M4 motorway and was coincided with a major road expansion which meant drivers were going slower and could safely view the puzzle. Unfortunately for the television show makers, the puzzle had 1,905 correct solutions, not the usual one solution.

Sudoku, as a puzzle, has captured the minds of tens of thousands of people. It’s a puzzle that is here to stay, but be warned, once you pick Sudoku up, you may struggle to put it down again.

Sudoku Puzzles

.
Sudoku Puzzles, which are also popularly known as the Number Place, was originally a game puzzle published for a newspaper in France. The year 1895 saw the birth of the said puzzle game. The Number Place puzzle was subsequently revived during the mid-80s in Japan and was later known as the Sudoku Puzzles. It started to gain its popularity among the international community during 2005.

During the revival of what was originally the Number Place puzzle in Japan, publishers abbreviated the phrase “suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru”, which literally meant “the digits must remain single”, and came up with the more popular name, Sudoku Puzzles.

The Sudoku Puzzles, unlike others, have a very easy instruction to follow. Although numbers have been conventionally used as the symbol or character for the puzzle, some of its variations substitute the numbers with letters, geometric figures, and others. Another version of the puzzle even used the positions in a baseball game to replace the numbers between one and nine. The characters used are actually irrelevant to the objective of the game itself.

The logic of the Sudoku puzzles is very simple. A grid with a dimension that is usually 3x3, the region, is found inside an outer grid with a consequent dimension of usually 9x9. All in all therefore, a total of 81 mini squares could be found. Some of these mini squares are marked by a certain character. Take for example, any number between 1 – 9. These characters are what they call the givens. The objective of the game is to place the numbers within the specified range. Also, these numbers must be placed in all the remaining blocks. The difficult part now rests on the task of making sure that horizontally, vertically, and regionally, there is no repetition of any of the numbers within the specified range.

The said puzzle games then became known as a type of game that would stimulate a person's logical reasoning, as well as other mental faculties. Some teachers even suggest this game to be able to stimulate and exercise the said cognitive function. Although it seems simple enough to solve, solving an entire puzzle would require complex mental functions. The mental functions needed will depend on the complexity of the given Sudoku Puzzles.

Some puzzles for the novice solvers come as big as a 25x25 grid. This would mean that there would be a total of 625 characters that need to be placed in an order that would satisfy the conditions of the puzzle. However, Sudoku Puzzles also cater to young people who are delighted by finding solutions to problems. A 4x4 version of the puzzle is available for kids to practice on.

Newspapers in the 1800s were good enough to supply their audience with a daily dose of the Sudoku Puzzles. This allowed for the puzzle to gain great popularity among fans of brain-twisters. It actually became as regular, during that time, as the more common crossword puzzle of our current daily newspaper.

Sudoku Puzzles have been part of this civilization. It is safe to conclude that it will definitely continue to do so. As long as people want to exercise their logical and deductive reasoning, it will continue to be published and supplied by fans and enthusiasts. This is especially true now that computer programs allow for game developers to the increase the dimensions of given Sudoku Puzzles. There is virtually an indefinite limit to how difficult one of these puzzles could get.

Beat The Kakuro Monster

.
Trailing the revival and the reign of the sudoku puzzles in 2005, another Western game gives a Japanese twist hit the puzzle scene. Kakuro puzzles, formerly known as cross sums, are now making waves as the newest puzzle craze. Bearing similarities in look and style to the more popular sudoku, kakuro puzzles promise to be more challenging and even more addictive than sudoku.

We know how brain and mental workouts enhance mental functions and sudoku has been included among the list of top brain boosters. Rightly so, since sudoku certainly poses quite a challenge to players. But if you think that simply placing numbers on squares in correct logic is challenging enough, try solving kakuro puzzles. They provide added difficulty and challenge of a higher degree since they require logic, cognitive, and practical mathematics. They are sure to provide you with a tougher and grittier mental exercise than the tamer sudoku. Certainly, these puzzles are not for the faint-hearted.

Kakuro puzzles are daunting, but they are not impossible. Enthusiasts emphasize that players need not have exceptional mathematical abilities or a genius like Einstein's to solve the puzzles. Practical mathematical knowledge is often enough to solve the puzzles as long as players employ effective strategy and logic. Having sufficient grasp and mastery of the puzzle rules make it easy for players like you to use the right tactics. The rules of the puzzles are relatively simple. The "playing board" looks similar to a crossword with white and dark squares. However, there are no clues at the bottom of the box. The numbers on the white spaces are the only clues a you have. Each number represents the sum of the missing numbers in cells or boxes it refers to. Note that same numbers can't be addends for the same run. For example, if the number in the box is 4, you can use 1 and 3 but not 2 and 2. Though the trial-and-error technique is often used, there are more sophisticated and logical techniques than filling your boxes with erasures and pencil marks.

A popular tactic is to search for cells with least combinations. These are usually the digits on the lower end of the number spectrum like 3, 5, 4, and other single digits. This limits the possible answers or numbers for a specific cell. Applying the same technique for the adjacent cells gives you a shot at the correct figure. Another tactic used in solving kakuro puzzles is looking for common numbers. This happens when two cells share a number. Finding the common number allows you to decide where to position the other number. To illustrate, if 3 and 1 are your answers for the number 4 at the vertical column or run and 1 and 5 for 6 at the horizontal line, 1 is your common number. Therefore, 1 merits the box at the intersection of 6 and 4. Experienced players solve puzzles by finding all possible and valid combinations plus correct cross referencing. Because as in sudoku, the position of the numbers matter in kakuro.

This third trick is probably the most elementary and least sophisticated. Marking answers on the edges of the boxes or cells with a pencil does not help you to solve the puzzles. However, it does help you track down your digits and combinations. This is especially helpful since kakuro puzzles have no definite limits. The "playing board" can measure as little as 3 by 3 or extend to God knows where. Over time, playing becomes easier because of practice. Also, you would have stock combinations in your head which you can use in playing. This is also a sign that you need to ditch the easier puzzles and move on to more challenging kakuro puzzles.

History of Sudoku

.
People today tend to marvel at the accomplishments of ancient civilizations, such as demonstrated by the pyramids of Egypt. Those ancient people had such creativity and intelligence, and they did not have TV or radio to entertain themselves. Instead, they relied upon their minds for entertainment, creativity, and solutions to problems.

Today, when people find the media has become somewhat dull, repeating stories in a cycle -- "the sames" rather than "the news -- they often turn to brain teasers and puzzles as a remedy. Doing so encourages our brain to get a bit of a mental work out, and dusts off unused parts of the mind that need to be worked to keep them healthy. Puzzles and riddles serve lots of purposes, and all over the world, people enjoy challenges that help keep the mind active and thinking up new ideas and strategies.

Many ancient games have been modernized, or simply repackaged, for a modern audience. Others have had a few tweaks to make them more relevant to today's world. Sudoku may have been played centuries ago, and its simple design can be inviting to newcomers, but there are layers in abundance here.

The word "Sudoku" is derived from the word for "number place." Based on the Japanese language, Sudoku indicates that it is a logic-based placement. Therefore, it is a kind of puzzle game. The first modern Sudoku puzzle was published in a US magazine in 1979. It was picked up by players in Japan in 1984 and was instantly popular. The original name of the game was abbreviated to Sudoku, which, translated into English, actually means "the digits must remain single." There are also various different pronunciations of "Sudoku" throughout the world, but the basic elements of the game remain the same. And the mental power benefits also accrue wherever the game is played.

Retired architect and freelance puzzle constructor Howard Garns created Sudoku while in his late 70s. Mr. Garns created puzzles for a living, so he knew the tricks to creating a great puzzle. The idea for Sudoku was derived from that of Euler's "Latin Square" puzzle. Howard Garns took the ancient game and altered it by adding a "third dimension". In the Sudoku version, Garns also provided the player with a partially completed grid that required the solver to complete the rest of the blank grids.

The history of Sudoku took another twist in Japan. After Howard Garns introduced the first Sudoku puzzle in a U. S. magazine, a person named Nikoli in Japan picked it up. While Mr. Garns had his own English name for the puzzle, Nikoli gave it the Japanese name Sudoku.

Originally, Sudoku was played manually in Japanese and American publications. In 1989, Loadstar Publishing introduced a computerized version, followed by another version by Apple. Sudoku has also been fashioned into a version of another popular 1980's puzzle, the Rubik's Cube.

Sudoku reached huge global popularity by 1997, and a Hong Kong resident named Wayne Gould created a computer program to create the game, which can spit out thousands of variations in short time. He later developed a business selling the puzzles around the world.

Many newspapers around the world found that including a Sudoku puzzle would guarantee a sold out edition. At that time, the game was the world's fasted growing, and likely peaked in popularity level in 2005.

The history of Sudoku is as interesting as the puzzle itself, with ancient roots, modern influences, and an ocean crossing to reach its full popularity. Fans of Sudoku should toast Mr. Howard Garns for bringing endless hours of puzzling pleasure to their lives.

Tights have since then become a part of the fashion style of the theater world especially black tights, particularly included among the Renaissance period costumes for plays and dances where the use of tights is prevalent.

DanceTights are also used by young girls especially in ballet classes and performance, gymnastics and a number of dances. In horseback riding, tights are worn during the summer or as a form of undergarment during the winter. In places where there is warm climate, tights can be worn throughout the year.

In the world of sports, tights are now used in a number of sporting events like cycling, wrestling, running, and athletics and even in football and basketball. Tights are used as coverings for the legs of cyclists and other athletic events by runners and wrestlers alike. These kinds of tights most of the time offers a much thicker form of spandex blend and are always footless.

In the NBA, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers famously wore one of the first tights in the sport, he wore it under his Lakers uniform shorts as a mean to create proper fitting in his legs and to generate much better movements. Since then many player started wearing tights in NBA games thus creating a minor controversy regarding its use.

Since its introduction early on in the history, tights have become a great part of our lives. Tights have its definite purpose and uses and incorporate an importance to those who uses it and who continues to wear it throughout time. Wearing tights brings a lot of advantage and brings good results in terms of comfort and style.

Black Sisters Are Tennis Phenomenon

.
Black Americans have been prominent in basketball and boxing since time immemorial. What’s noteworthy in the past decade is that they have invaded other sports as well including golf and tennis which used to be dominated by the middle-class whites. And what’s praiseworthy, too, is that the Black Americans that have made a name for themselves in the world of tennis are not males but females and sisters.

We’re talking about none other than the Afro-American Williams sisters – Venus and Serena. Both ladies have proven that race is not a big issue in achieving their dreams in tennis. They are proud of being blacks and they will do anything to fulfill their goals of winning more tennis titles. In their several years of competing against white tennis players, Venus and Serena were able to establish their own style, self-confidence as well as their unique fashion sense. Even more boosting their confidence is the presence of their family members at most of their tournaments. For what they are and for what they have accomplished in their young life, the Williams sisters are indeed worthy of emulation not only by black women but by all people, in general.

Venus Williams is older by just a year than Serena. Both had earned the world number one rank in tennis with Venus having won five Grand Slam singles titles and Serena having won eight Grand Slam singles titles plus an Olympic gold medal in women’s doubles. Serena is said to be the best player of her time.

The sisters’ involvement in tennis is attributed to their father’s dream of having at least one daughter become a tennis superstar. It was also his way of letting them out of their neighborhood – the violent suburb of Compton in Los Angeles. Richard Williams had no regrets at all as her daughters never let him down. At a very young age of four and a half, Serena had already won her first tournament. Before she reached 10, she had won 46 of the 49 tournaments she entered. She even replaced Venus at one point as the number one ranked tennis player in the 12 and under category in California. At 14, she already became a professional player.

Venus, the older of the Williams sisters, also became professional at the age of 14. Together with Serena in 1999, they became the first sister team to win a Grand Slam doubles title in the 20th century at both the French Open and U.S. Open. The following year in 2000, the sisters won for the first time the Wimbledon doubles title. It was in the same year when Venus won the singles title at the Wimbledon and U.S. Open and two gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. It was in the year 2002 when Venus was declared the world’s top ranked player becoming the first African-American player to reach the spot since the tennis computer rankings started in 1975. She also placed 25th in the Tennis Magazine’s 40 Greatest Players of the Tennis era list. Apart from her career in tennis, Venus is also engaged in business and is actually the CEO of her interior design company “V Starr Interiors” in Florida.

Table tennis - The long pimple ban

.
The proposal by the ITTF to ban certain long pimple rubbers was announced well over a year ago now. The reasoning was that some long pimple rubbers were treated, making the tips of the pimples less grippy then the sides, producing different spin depending on how far you bend the pimples. The rubber properties are supposed to be consistent throughout, so they propose these types of rubbers should be banned.

Trouble is, it very hard to test if a rubber is treated or not. Because most of the treated pimples were designed to have little to no friction on the tips, the ITTF proposed to simply set a minimum friction level for long pimpled rubber, anything below it would be illegal. A device that could measure the friction coefficient was not too hard to design, and could be used at tournament for testing. They admitted that this may result in some non-treated rubber to be banned as well, but this did not seem to bother them.

Since this announcement there has been very little information or discussions by the ITTF, although it's is a very common topic among long pimple players. Players that are currently using frictionless are lost, and can't plan their future rubbers because they fear it might be banned. Similarly manufacturers don't know what criteria to use to design new, or modify their existing long pimples to meet the new criteria. Retailers don't know what to stock, since any banned rubbers will be very hard to sell.

Firstly I question the reasoning behind the actual proposal. Long pimple players are already a minority, frictionless players even smaller, so can it really be in the interest of the players and the sport in general to ban these rubbers? I know there have been a few letters written to the ITTF with objections to the proposed ban. Most of these were ignored because they did not come through the right channels. Some have been discussed in the ITTF forum, but I have not seen a solid reason that makes a real case for me.

The ITTF feels justified by the decision, since the proposal was initiated by players themselves. However I wonder how many long pimple players were part of this proposal by players? Where they even consulted or given an opportunity to defend their position? Since long pimple players are a minority, they only have a small voice. Many inverted players may not care about this decision, or are happy because they struggle playing against this type of rubber. But is this a good enough reason for the ITTF to ban them? It's a right of the players that's being taken away here, and this should not be taken lightly!

Secondly I think it's outrageous that the ITTF proposal was made so long ago, and still no more details have been provided. It's left manufacturers, retailers and most importantly PLAYERS in limbo for a long time!

I have recently heard some rumours that some of the manufacturers have been given some more details about minimum friction level, and a list of rubbers that may be banned. The ban is rumoured to be effective as of July 2008. Assuming this is true, has there been any announcement by the ITTF for the players who they are supposed to represent? I think not!

I can't help but think that the decisions made by the ITTF over the years have been more political than anything, or somehow motivated by money, since many did not seem to benefit the players or the sport at all! I'm sure money had a lot to do with it so if you want to know answers, see who benefits from the decisions follow the money!

How to Have a Winning Tennis Game in Six Simple Steps

.
Tennis is not a game for the weary or slow moving. Tennis is a game of quick movements that use every muscle in your body. It is difficult to become a fantastic tennis player due to several reasons including the inability to find an affordable tennis club, lessons, or players to practice against. These obstacles can impede your improvement in tennis which will make you frustrated. Before you quit tennis altogther, try these six simple steps to a winning tennis game.

Buy a graphite racquet. If you don't want to spend any money on a new racquet and think that your parents' old wooden relics are just fine, think again. A wooden racquet simply cannot generate the power of the newer graphite models so you will be constantly underpowered when using one. Plus, the head on the newer racquets are much larger so it makes hitting the ball that much easier. Besides, there are graphite racquets out there starting around $20 that are fine for getting started.

Hit against a board. While these are getting hard to find, there are tennis courts that have a board set up against the fence. Before thinking about playing a match, try hitting against the board to improve your accuracy. Once you can hit 8-10 balls without missing, you are ready to start playing some matches with real people.

Keep moving. Tennis is not baseball. Tennis is a sport that demands constant movement in order to succeed. You have to move towards that ball the moment you know where it is heading. Being out of position is a common mistake for beginners so improve your chances for success by always moving. Once you hit a shot, move back towards the center of the court behind the baseline. Don't wait for the next shot ... move!

Andre Agassi may use a two-handed backhand, but tennis is his job. Two-handed backhands can be limiting and are harder to master. Therefore, try using a one-handed backhand. You can reach for more types of shots and not worry about a ball jamming up into your chest. A one-handed backhand is a good addition to any tennis player's game.

The word "emotion" should leave your vocabulary. Tennis can be frustrating and you may feel tempted to hit the ball as hard as you can. A frustrated tennis player tends to hit balls out long or nail them in the net. You need to keep a cool head and forget any lost points. Don't lose control of a match due to your emotions.

Should you hit the ball hard and flat or with spin? Spin is in. Spin can take time and effort to learn, but it is well worth it. Spin is a sign of an advanced player. Spin requires thinking and placing topsin or backspin on the tennis ball. Your follow through is different and the ball bounces in a different fashion. Spin helps you to trick your opponent as a ball that looks like it is going out spins right in on the baseline. Watch the professional tennis players. They all use spin.

Tennis will help you to improve your fitness level and have fun at the same time. You can also improve your hand-eye coordination. Tennis can be mastered if you add the steps listed in your tennis training program. Have fun on the court and watch your number of winning shots go through the roof.

Collecting Free World Team Tennis Autographs By Mail

.
Each year, twelve teams compete in the World Team Tennis (WTT) Pro League and are comprised of some of the sport’s top athletes. The season runs for three weeks during summer and attracts over 150,000 fans annually.

If you would like to request a signed photo from any of the players, you may do so by writing in care of their World Team Tennis team. When preparing your request, always handwrite a brief letter and be complimentary to the addressee. A SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) will help to increase your chances of receiving a response and, if requesting a signed photo, a 9x12 envelope would be ideal. The best way to prepare an autograph request is to fold the 9x12 SASE, with postage affixed, three ways and place it inside of a #10 business sized envelope. Be sure to place your letter inside, as well. Address the #10 envelope to the proper athlete in care of his/her World Team Tennis team and take it to the post office for mailing.

Below is a list of the current twelve teams and rosters, which can be used for the purpose of fan mail. While there is no guarantee of receiving a response, following the above guidelines and using the correct mailing address will help to increase your chances of building an autograph collection from some of the top superstars of tennis.

Six Tips Guaranteed To Improve Your Tennis Game

.
Tennis puts stress and strain on your body. Tennis puts stress and strain on your nerves as well when you try to master it. Tennis can be difficult to master when you don't practice or you can't afford to join a pricey tennis club. Taking private tennis lessons can be very costly. Plus, it may feel like you spend most of your lessons retrieving tennis balls rather than hitting them. Despite these set backs, your tennis game can improve if you follow these six tips.

Where should you begin to practice your tennis skills? Find a hitting wall or board to hit against. You can usually find these walls at public tennis courts or you can even create one at your home with a large wooden board. These walls have a limited height and width so they teach you to be accurate with your shots. Strive to hit 8-10 balls in a row. When you improve your accuracy and consistency you are ready to hit the tennis court.

Your feet should not grow roots into the ground when you play tennis. Your feet should always be moving whether you are running for a shot or about to split step in response to your opponent's shot. The entire court needs to be covered and you better be ready to sprint to any part of the court at the drop of a hat. Often times beginning tennis players are caught out of position and hit a weak shot in return. Don't let this fault become part of your tennis game. Shuffle back to the center of the baseline between each shot.

What about my tennis strokes? There is a constant debate over a one-handed versus two-handed backhand. Use the one-handed backhand because it takes less time to be in the proper position for this shot. Plus, you will have a wider variety of angles and less prone to having the ball fly into you while you are preparing for the shot.

Have a game face and show no emotion. If you become angry during the match your opponent will know that they are in your head. An emotional tennis player tends to hit the ball in the net and out in frustration. Take a moment to breathe. Tennis is a game of accuracy and consistency. Keep your emotions in check and you will rack up wins.
